What "SFI rated" actually means

SFI certification isn't a marketing label. The SFI Foundation, founded in 1978, is an independent non-profit that sets and tests the safety specifications for racing equipment used across North American motorsport. When a product carries an SFI patch, the manufacturer has submitted samples for independent lab testing against a specific spec — and the certification is valid only for that exact product, that exact construction, and that exact rating.

Sanctioning bodies write SFI specs into their rulebooks as minimum requirements. If your series rules say "SFI 3.2A/5 minimum," that's a hard line — anything below it fails tech.

Why your full kit matters: the personal safety system

A racing suit alone isn't the whole answer. The SFI Foundation describes driver safety as a system — suit, accessories, and helmet working together. A single-layer SFI 3.2A/1 suit gives you about 3 seconds of thermal protection. Add SFI 3.3 fire-resistant underwear and you roughly double it. Add SFI 3.3 gloves and shoes and the burn-vulnerable extremities — hands, wrists, ankles — get the same coverage as your torso.

Your suit is the anchor of the system. Everything else fills in the gaps that bare skin would expose.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which SFI rating I need?
Check your sanctioning body's rulebook for the minimum SFI spec required. Sanctioning bodies — NHRA, NASCAR, ASN Canada FIA, regional ovals — list the spec by name (e.g., "SFI 3.2A/5"). You can match or exceed that spec, but you cannot go below it.

Does my SFI certification ever expire?
Most SFI driver suits, gloves, and shoes do not carry a formal expiration date, but the certification remains valid only as long as the garment has not been damaged, contaminated, or burned. SFI 3.2A/15 and above (top drag classes) require formal recertification every 5 years.

Do I need fire-resistant underwear with my suit?
For an SFI 3.2A/1 single-layer suit, yes — SFI 3.3 undergarments roughly double your thermal protection. For 3.2A/5 and above, base layers are optional but strongly recommended. Most pro-level drivers wear them in every series.

Can I mix gear from different ratings?
Yes, as long as each piece meets or exceeds your series rules. A driver in a 3.2A/5 suit can wear 3.3/5 gloves and shoes, and most do.

Will Canadian sanctioning bodies accept SFI certification?
Yes. SFI is recognized and used as a minimum standard across virtually all North American sanctioning bodies operating in Canada, including ASN Canada FIA, NHRA Canadian events, and provincial oval series.

How long does custom SFI gear take to make?
Suits run 6 to 10 weeks from artwork approval. Gloves and shoes are typically 4 to 6 weeks. Undergarments are usually 2 to 4 weeks. We confirm a firm ship date when we accept the order.
