Understanding FIA homologation

FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) is the global governing body for international motorsport. FIA homologation means a racing suit has been independently tested and certified to meet the FIA's published technical specification for fire-retardant racewear. Sanctioning bodies that run under FIA jurisdiction — including ASN Canada FIA, IMSA, WEC, FIA WRC, F1, F2, F3, and most international touring car series — require FIA-homologated suits as a minimum standard.

Two FIA standards are active and relevant for Canadian drivers today:

FIA 8856-2018 — Auto racing. The current homologation standard for fire-retardant racewear used in auto racing. It replaced the older FIA 8856-2000 standard and tightened requirements for flame protection, heat transmission, mechanical resistance, and tensile strength. Required for international and most sanctioned national road-course competition.

FIA 8877-2022 — Karting. The current homologation standard for karting overalls, replacing earlier FIA karting specifications. Required for FIA-sanctioned international and most national karting events, including ASN Canada FIA karting championships.

A single suit cannot carry both certifications — they test against different abrasion and fire-resistance profiles for different vehicles.

What we build today

FIA 8877-2022 Grade 1 karting overalls are in stock and ready to order in custom configurations. Built with a Cordura outer shell, full 360° arm gussets, lower-back and crotch stretch panels, embroidered or sublimated graphics to your team design. Approved for sanctioned karting series from club through international competition.

Custom FIA 8856-2018 auto racing suits are available on request. If your series rulebook specifies FIA 8856-2018, contact us to discuss a custom build — we'll confirm your specifications, materials, and series-compliance requirements before quoting.

FIA vs SFI: which do you need?

Canadian drivers often face a choice between FIA and SFI homologation. The short version:

• SFI is widely used and accepted in North America — NHRA, NASCAR, most regional drag, oval, and short-track series across Canada and the US. If you race exclusively in North American sanctioning bodies, SFI is typically what your rulebook requires.
• FIA is the international standard — required for ASN Canada FIA road course events, IMSA, Ferrari Challenge, professional touring car series, and any racing where international acceptance matters.
• Dual-homologated suits exist — some FIA 8856-2018 suits also carry SFI 3.2A/5 certification, making them eligible for both FIA and SFI sanctioned events. If your racing crosses both worlds, dual certification can be worth the additional cost.

Always check your specific series rulebook before ordering. A suit certified to the wrong standard fails tech inspection regardless of how premium the construction is.

Why a Canadian-built FIA suit

Most FIA suits sold in Canada are imported from European manufacturers — Alpinestars, OMP, Sabelt, Sparco, Marina. These are excellent suits, but the buying experience involves cross-border shipping, US dollar pricing, customs delays, and 6 to 10 week lead times from offshore production.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between FIA 8856-2018 and FIA 8877-2022?
FIA 8856-2018 certifies fire-retardant auto racing suits. FIA 8877-2022 certifies karting overalls — a different garment with different abrasion requirements. They are not interchangeable, and a single suit cannot carry both homologations.

Will my FIA suit also be SFI-rated?
Not by default. Some suits carry dual FIA 8856-2018 + SFI 3.2A/5 certification — this is achieved by submitting samples to both testing bodies separately. If you need dual certification, specify it at order time and we'll confirm feasibility.

How long does a custom FIA-homologated suit take to build?
Karting overalls run 6 to 10 weeks from artwork approval. Custom FIA 8856-2018 auto racing builds are quoted individually — typically 8 to 12 weeks depending on specification complexity.

Do FIA suits expire?
FIA homologation does not have a calendar expiration in the same way SFI 3.2A/15+ does, but the certification remains valid only as long as the garment has not been damaged, contaminated, or burned. Series rulebooks may specify their own maximum garment age — check yours.

What if my series rulebook isn't clear about FIA vs SFI?
Send us the relevant page from your rulebook before you order. We'll confirm what certification you need so you don't end up with a beautifully built suit that fails tech inspection.
