What Is an FIA Racing Suit?

An FIA racing suit is a fire-resistant driver suit tested and homologated to the standards set by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile — the governing body for Formula 1, WRC, GT racing, and most international motorsport sanctioning bodies. Where SFI certification is the standard for North American oval and drag racing, FIA homologation is required for international-level competition and many road racing series worldwide.

FIA 8856-2018 — The Current Standard

FIA 8856-2018 is the current FIA homologation standard for driver racing suits. It replaced the previous FIA 8856-2000 specification and introduced more rigorous testing requirements for thermal protection, ergonomics, and construction. Any suit claiming FIA homologation for competition must meet this current standard — older FIA 8856-2000 suits are no longer accepted by most international series.

FIA vs SFI — What's the Difference?

Both FIA and SFI are independent certification bodies that test and approve motorsport safety equipment. The key differences:

FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) — Used globally. Required for international series, WRC, GT racing, Formula series, and any FIA-affiliated championship. The current standard for driver suits is FIA 8856-2018.

SFI (Specialty and Formal Institute) — Predominant in North American motorsport. Required for NASCAR, NHRA, SCCA, and most Canadian oval, dirt, and drag racing series. Standards range from SFI 3.2A/1 through 3.2A/20.
