The SFI 3.2A/5 rating is the most widely required fire suit certification in North American motorsport. It means the suit has passed the Specialty and Formal Institute's testing standard for two-layer flame-resistant construction — specifically tested to provide significantly more burn protection than a single-layer SFI 3.2A/1 suit.
Most sanctioning bodies that mandate fire suits — including NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, IMSA, SCCA, and the majority of Canadian oval and road course series — require at minimum an SFI 3.2A/5 rated suit. If you are stepping up from a single-layer suit or buying your first certified fire suit, the 3.2A/5 is the standard to meet.
Two-Layer Construction — What It Means for You
A two-layer suit is built with two separate layers of flame-resistant fabric. The outer shell handles the initial exposure to heat and flame while the inner layer provides a secondary barrier between the fire and your skin. This construction gives the suit a Thermal Protective Performance (TPP) rating that translates to meaningful additional seconds of protection compared to a single-layer suit.
At EPIC Racewear, our SFI 3.2A/5 suits are available in two material options:
Lightweight Nomex — Two-Layer
Nomex is the benchmark material for professional motorsport fire suits worldwide. Our lightweight Nomex two-layer suits combine certified flame resistance with reduced weight and better airflow — the right choice for drivers who run in warm conditions or want maximum comfort during long stints.
FR Cotton (Proban®) — Two-Layer
Our FR Cotton two-layer suits use a Cotton Proban® outer shell — a traditional and proven material for club and semi-professional racing. FR Cotton suits offer excellent durability and a comfortable feel, at a price point accessible for weekly racers and weekend warriors.
Fully Custom — Built to Your Design
Every SFI 3.2A/5 suit from EPIC Racewear is custom-built from scratch. You are not buying an off-the-shelf suit and adding a name patch. You choose the colours, the design layout, your sponsor logo placements, and your exact measurements. We build the suit around you.
Custom sizing is included as standard. No up-charge, no guessing — your suit fits the way a fire suit should fit.

FAQ Schema (add via Rank Math FAQ Block)
Q: What does SFI 3.2A/5 mean on a racing suit? SFI 3.2A/5 is a certification issued by the Specialty and Formal Institute (SFI) confirming the suit meets the standard for two-layer flame-resistant construction. The "5" refers to the protection level — significantly higher than a single-layer 3.2A/1 suit. Most North American sanctioning bodies require a minimum of SFI 3.2A/5 for competitive racing.
Q: What is the difference between SFI 3.2A/1 and SFI 3.2A/5? An SFI 3.2A/1 suit is a single-layer construction suited for entry-level or recreational racing. An SFI 3.2A/5 suit has two layers of flame-resistant material, providing a substantially higher Thermal Protective Performance (TPP) rating. If your series or track requires a two-layer suit, it will specify SFI 3.2A/5. Read our full comparison in the SFI 3.2A/1 vs SFI 3.2A/5 guide.
Q: Can I get an SFI 3.2A/5 suit fully custom designed? Yes. Every SFI 3.2A/5 suit from EPIC Racewear is custom-built. You choose the colours, sponsor logo placements, design layout, and sizing. Custom sizing is included at no extra charge. We provide a design proof for your approval before production begins.
Q: Is Nomex or FR Cotton better for a two-layer racing suit? It depends on your conditions and budget. Nomex is lighter, more breathable, and the material used in top-level professional motorsport. FR Cotton (Proban®) is heavier but extremely durable and more affordable — a solid choice for club and weekly racers. Both materials are available in SFI 3.2A/5 certified construction at EPIC Racewear.
Q: Do your SFI 3.2A/5 suits ship to the United States? Yes. EPIC Racewear ships to both Canada and the USA. US customers can order and pay in USD. Production and shipping timelines are the same for both markets.
