SFI certification means your race suit has been independently tested and approved by the SFI Foundation — the governing body that sets fire resistance standards for North American motorsport. Every suit that leaves EPIC Racewear carrying an SFI rating has been manufactured to the exact specifications required by that certification level.
EPIC Racewear is a listed SFI Foundation participating manufacturer for SFI Spec 3.2A — certified for both 3.2A/1 single-layer and 3.2A/5 two-layer construction. When you order a custom race suit from us, you are ordering from a manufacturer whose products meet the actual standard — not a reseller relabelling generic suits.
Choose Your SFI Rating
The right suit for you depends on the series you race in and the level of protection your sanctioning body requires. Here is how the ratings break down:
SFI 3.2A/1 — Single Layer
The entry-level SFI certification. A single-layer fire suit built for club racing, arrive-and-drive events, and series where a basic fire suit is required but a two-layer suit is not mandated. Lightweight, comfortable, and fully custom. Best for: casual oval racing, karting events that permit fire suits, time attack, and beginner classes.
SFI 3.2A/5 — Two Layer
The most commonly required certification in North American motorsport. Two layers of flame-resistant material — Nomex or FR Cotton — provide substantially higher Thermal Protective Performance than a single-layer suit. Required by most weekly oval sanctioning bodies, SCCA, IMSA, and Canadian series. Best for: short track oval, dirt track, road racing, and any series requiring two-layer protection.
SFI 3.2A/15 & 3.2A/20 — Multi-Layer Drag Racing Suits
Purpose-built for drag racing where high-horsepower applications demand maximum fire protection. Multi-layer Nomex construction for NHRA-compliant drag suit requirements. Best for: NHRA licensed drivers, nitro classes, and high-index bracket racing.
SFI 3.4/5 — NASCAR-Rated Suits
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series specification. Three-layer construction rated to the highest SFI standard for stock car racing. Required for NASCAR-sanctioned events at all levels. Best for: NASCAR Weekly, Late Model, and Super Late Model competitors.
Fully Custom — Every Suit, Every Time
No two EPIC Racewear race suits are the same. Every suit is custom-built from scratch to your measurements and design. You choose:
- Base colour and secondary colours
- Sponsor logo placement and sizing
- Driver name and number placement
- Fabric type (Nomex, FR Cotton, Ultralight Nomex)
- SFI certification level
- Custom sizing — included at no additional charge
Our design team produces a proof for your approval before production begins. You see exactly what your suit will look like before a single seam is sewn.
Nomex vs FR Cotton — Which Is Right for You?
Nomex is the premium fire-resistant material used by professional racing teams worldwide. It is lighter, more breathable, and more flexible than FR Cotton. Nomex suits are the right choice for drivers who prioritize comfort during long stints or race in warm conditions.
FR Cotton (Proban®) is a traditional, proven material with excellent durability. FR Cotton suits are heavier than Nomex but extremely robust and priced accessibly for club and weekly racers. Both Nomex and FR Cotton are available across all SFI certification levels at EPIC Racewear.

FAQ Schema (add via Rank Math FAQ Block)
Q: What SFI rating do I need for my race suit? It depends on your series rulebook. Most Canadian and US oval and road course series require a minimum of SFI 3.2A/5 (two-layer). Entry-level and club series may accept SFI 3.2A/1 (single-layer). Drag racing licences typically require SFI 3.2A/15 or higher. Always check with your sanctioning body before ordering. Read our SFI Rating Guide for a full breakdown.
Q: Can I get a fully custom race suit with my sponsor logos? Yes. Every race suit from EPIC Racewear is built from scratch with your exact design, sponsor logo placements, driver name, and number. Custom design and custom sizing are both included in the price — no up-charges.
